I was going to say, “Read the Wikipedia entry,” but it’s characteristically inaccurate. I got all uppity recently when I learned that the cash register in Pink Floyd’s “Money” was originally used on The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine.” Really? That’s amazing. So, naturally, I was like, “Well where is this magical cash register? I want to see it.” Turns out there is no cash register: the sound was taken from a sound effects library at Abbey Road Studios, but apparently one person started this myth about this Beatles/Pink Floyd cash register and now everyone just cuts and pastes the same goddamn story over and over again. Which is my longwinded way of saying the internet is stupid. What was the question again? Oh. How did Big Brother start? The story is actually pretty indicative of the mag itself. Rocco submitted a 101 ad to Trans World that featured Gabriel Rodriguez holding a gun to his head. I think the idea was that he couldn’t make a trick so he was going to kill himself. The ad was rejected by the conservative, right-wing, Christian nut jobs that owned TWS. So Rocco decided, fuck this, I’ll make my own magazine where I can say whatever the fuck I want. And that’s how Big Brother was born. “And I’m not going to clean my room either!”

An English language newspaper like the New York Times or the Miami Herald. Or the Guardian (my personal favourite). Or a copy of USA Today that's got a story about morbidly obese people in it. Most amusing!

Somebody dressed as Bob Hope doing fantastic Bob Hope impersonations and telling all those hilarious Bob Hope jokes about golf and Hollywood and Bing Crosby. Oh God, I wish I'd been alive in those days, so that Bob Hope could have come and entertained me in some World War 2 hell-hole before I went off and got shot. What joy they must have experienced...

Seven dwarves, dressed up as those dwarves out of that marvellous Walt Disney film abouit the woman who goes to sleep fro a hundred years after biting a poisoned dwarf, or maybe after pricking her finger on a rather sharp apple... or something. What was the name of that film? Was it Cinderella? Taller people are acceptable, of course. It's attitude, more than height, that's importantb here. Don't forget the pointy hats!

Sleep When You're Dead

Don’t get me wrong, I love watching Bryan Iguchi making powder turns in interior BC, and by God I would love to be him and have his life, but in many ways it just re-enforces the cosy, middle-aged model for snowboarding. Funny shaped snowboard, unkempt facial hair, powder, some abstract philosphical statements that you read on the back of a Cornflakes packet, and a wistful reminiscence of what it was like doing pipe comps “back in the day”. It’s kind of an extreme version of buying some nice slippers.

What inspired that?
Probably some of the super-tech shit that hinders snowboarding culture from moving forward because it's so acrobatic. That stuff is crazy to watch and I love that it exists, but it seems like they're trying to make snowboarding a viewer-oriented sport instead of a cool activity that people can participate in. And there's no culture that comes with that. There's nothing for people to identify with. So I wanted Yesterday to sort of be an antithesis to all that.

Yeah. If it was going to be crap it was going to be crap for everyone. For some reason this isn't the case for bus stops. It was an opportunity for artists to make money, one of the only options for them. They grabbed as many materials and ideas as they could and put it all into their bus stops.
