Remaining on the Slopes of Mount Sinabung

Smithsonian 2015 Photo Contest Grand Prize Winner - Albert Ivan Damanik

Volcanic material flows from Mount Sinabung, as seen from the village of Jeraya, North Sumatra, Indonesia on June 26, 2015. Mount Sinabung intermittently spewed burning ash and gas a week after authorities told residents to evacuate the danger zone that lay with within a radius of seven kilometers (4.4 miles) from the crater.

A 3D Printed Hemp Skateboard

There’s also growing interest in the use the exceptionally fibrous structure of hemp as part of a renewable movement which centers around using what’s called hempcrete to build homes. MatterLab in Brooklyn, NY, is already producing a hemp-based 3D printing filament, and a number of designers are using it to look to the future.
Designer Liz Ciokajlo says she believes hemp and 3D printing will have a place in the next generation of apparel design as witnessed by her Hemp Shoes project.
Ciokajlo, a London-based designer who has a background in product and furniture design, created a project, ‘Natural Selection,’ which was focused on examining ways 3D printing can alter footwear by using natural material in 3D printing.

Inside Paul’s Boutique: Interview with Mike Simpson of The Dust Brothers

Many of those stories have been reported before, but one of my favorites is the genesis of the song “Egg Man”. Before they rented a house in LA, they had all been staying at the Mondrian hotel while we were recording. And the Comedy Store was right across the street from that hotel. One afternoon, there was a line of tourists standing outside the Comedy Store, so the guys decided to get several dozen eggs and start pelting from the eight-story hotel. One family pulled up in front of the Comedy Store, and the dad got out to open the door for his kids when Yauch just threw an egg and hit the guy right in the head. The egg exploded all over him and his kids, so they just got back in the car and drove away. (laughs) Now, as an adult, I feel really bad for the guy, but as a 23 year-old, it was pretty funny, and it inspired the song “Egg Man”. Yauch took it so far as to hire toy designers from Mattel to come up with prototypes for the Beastie Boys Egg Gun. Somewhere in the world, there are these amazing renderings of these potential egg guns with the Beastie Boys brand on it. which is hilarious.

Back to The Future | Could Old-School Freeriding Be The Next Big Thing in Skiing & Snowboarding?

As freestyle has become more complicated it’s become more difficult to understand. Rail tricks – hardways, switch-ups and the like – have become so technical that even commentators frequently call them wrong. On jumps, double, triple and even quadruple corks are now possible.

The complaint that these modern moves are “just gymnastics”, is one that you hear ever more frequently from core snowboarders and skiers. And for an average viewer – for audiences outside of skiing and snowboarding’s core – freestyle is becoming increasingly difficult to relate to. Could the pendulum of popularity be swinging back in the opposite direction?

Climate change is no longer about prevention but actively fighting

In the beginning of this year, in Squamish, British Columbia, the privately owned (and backed by Bill Gates) company Carbon Engineering began the construction of the first air-capture CO2 demo plant. For years, the company has been developing the technology that is now ready to be implemented on a larger scale.

Build a better paper airplane

Because making a paper airplane will always make your day better.

The Hammer

While there are far more advanced paper airplanes, this one, in my opinion, is the perfect balance of complexity and accessibility for the Average Paper Airplane Joe. It has far more folds than the previous two models, and also flies the best and farthest. Pay attention with this one, folks, and the payoff is well worth it.
